Deepali Jaju's Story as an Albino in India
Deepali Jaju’s journey as an albino woman in India has been a rollercoaster of experiences. Growing up in Kolhapur, she was no stranger to teasing and the constant struggle with poor vision. These early years were tough, and self-acceptance was a distant dream until her marriage. Moving to Pune for work, she encountered numerous challenges in her job at an MNC. Yet, it was these hardships that taught her resilience and revealed her unique strengths.
Despite having no prior family history of albinism, Deepali found her greatest inspiration in her husband and his brother, who also have albinism. Their ability to drive two-wheelers motivated her to learn driving. Today, she confidently navigates four-wheelers too, proudly holding her license.
Currently residing in Hyderabad, she is married to a businessman who creates readymade garments for men. Their 12-year-old daughter, who also has albinism, is a bright spark in their lives. An all-rounder in her 8th-grade ICSE class, she excels in academics, karate, and has even memorized the Bhagavad Gita.
Deepali's professional journey has been diverse. Armed with a BTech in Computer Engineering, she worked in IT for 2.5 years before taking a break post-marriage. Teaching has always been close to her heart, leading her to roles as a QMath teacher and conducting Vedic maths courses. Currently, she is connected with Bhanzu, an online math teaching platform.
Living with albinism has been a challenge, but it has also been a source of immense strength. Her experiences have taught her that she can excel in ways others might not. Witnessing her daughter's achievements amplifies this belief. Her daughter uses tools like a telescope for her studies, recommended by the LV Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad, a testament to how support and technology can make a difference.
Raising awareness about albinism is crucial. The Indian Albinism Foundation plays a vital role in this mission, striving to educate and spread awareness about albinism in India. By supporting such initiatives, society can foster a more inclusive and understanding environment.
To parents and siblings of those with albinism, Deepali's advice is simple: unwavering support and belief in their potential are key. Her siblings and parents were always there for her, indirectly guiding her through her journey.
Today, as Deepali reflects on her story, she is filled with gratitude and determination. Her journey has taken her from struggling with self-acceptance to achieving success in both her personal and professional life. Her dream is to continue spreading awareness and motivating others. After all, if she can drive a four-wheeler and achieve her dreams, what’s stopping others?
How can society do more to support and empower those with albinism?
